Vacca (as expected) Prevails In Wendy's VI -
Ruffin "Goes Postal" in Lower Section! - Registers 5 Clean Kills!
A new record
number of 60! different chessplayers competed in Wendy's VI which
concluded Wednesday evening. In the Top Section, after
FM Dr. Luigi Vacca (2325p) became somewhat rattled by the distraction
of one of our rare "club meetings," the "good Doctor" offered a Draw to
Gary Newsom (1917) the acceptance of which (See
Game 0060) guaranteed him at least a share of,
if not clear 1st Place with a score of 4-1.
Only David Griffin (1688), whose adjournment versus W.F. Newton
II poses few winning chances, can equal Vacca's score. Also in the
Top Section, newcomer Justin Daniel (1937) has adjourned 2 Pawns up after
playing a trick opening against NM Leland Fuerstman's Alekhine Defense.
The resulting Queen and minor piece ending still shows hope for Draw.
Tarokh Taefi (1741) and CCC Assistant Director Patrick McCartney (1927)
drew. In the Middle Section, recent returnee Joe
Crump (1600a) returned to competition with a vengence with his Rd:5
win over CCC Website advisor Carl McKern (1507). Crump, after missing
Rd:1, posted a strong 3.5-.5 to take clear 1st Place. Also, in the
Middle Section, CCC Internal Affairs Committee Chairman Paul F. Lucas
(1696) upended Hungarian Superstar Andras Bader (1629) while Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1499) upset Doug "REman" Millsaps (1620).
Don Hofer (1538) and returnee from 10 years ago, David T. Richards (1700)
have adjourned. In the Lower Section, Timothy Ruffin
(1230), an
"apparantly extremely disgruntled" United States Postal worker, picked-off
5 helpless victims to capture the Lower Section title. For scoring a perfect
5-0, Ruffin has earned the right to compete for free in the Middle Section
of Wendy's VII. Other Lower Section winners were Lee "R&Bman" Richardson
(Happy Anniversary, Dude!!),
Don Norwood (See Game 0061)
CCC Lower Section Representative Alphonse Ashamalla, and Daryl
"Flash" Gordon. All results may be viewed in

Newton Finishes
Strong At L.P.O; Ties for 1st in U2200 Section - Newsom and Millsaps Shine
CCC's favorite son, William F. "Frankie" Newton
II (2150)
may have gained those elusive last 50 rating
points toward mastery this past weekend at the L.P.O. as he scored a strong
4-1 to share the top honors with two others in the Under 2200 section,
each winning $444.50. Also, in that section, Gary Newsom (1917)
turned in a 3.5-1.5 to take 5th Place and $145. In the Under 1800
Section, Doug "REman" Millsaps (1620)
shared 3rd-5th Place with a score of 3.5-1.5 and took home $140.
(See Game 0059) Good work Team
Charlotte; bring home those rating points!

Is Charlotte Chess Club's Newest Master!! Takes Clear 1st Place
In Midtown XXI; Lowder "Makes Noise" In Middle Section - Scores Perfect
3-0!
Twenty of the metrolina area's most worthy
competitors cast their lots to compete in Midtown XXI on August
7, 1999. In the Top Section, soon-to-be (based on our mathematical
calculations) National Master William F. "Frankie" Newton
II
again demonstrated his chessical skills by defeating Patrick McCartney
(1927) in Rd:1 and Randy Lovelace (1968) in Rd:2 before cruising into clear
1st Place after a "quick draw" with NM Daniel Liu (1990) and pocketing
$80. NM Daniel Liu (1990) and Randy Lovelace (1968)
each scored 2-1 winning back their entry fees. In the Middle Section,
tournament veteran Phillip Lowder (1635) swept his section with
a perfect 3-0 while Thomas Hayes (1373) and Joe Crump (1500)
had their entry fees returned. In the Lower Section Quad,
a three-way tie between Samuel Christopher (1136), Joe Feiler
(1076) and Brandon Brown (1138)
paid each player $20. This section featured a rare encounter between Terry
Brown, Esq, and his son Brandon...The "kid" won! (Fuerstman directed)
